Scritti Politti

Scritti Politti is a British band that emerged from the post-punk scene in the late 1970s. Formed in Leeds in 1977, the group was initially led by Welsh musician and songwriter Green Gartside. Originally, Scritti Politti leaned towards an anarchic and experimental sound, reflective of the punk ethos of the time. Their early music, characterized by its DIY approach, began to gain attention with the release of their debut EP, "Skank Bloc Bologna," in 1978. As the 1980s unfolded, Scritti Politti underwent a significant transformation, shifting towards a polished, synth-pop style that found commercial success. This transition was marked by the release of the critically acclaimed album "Cupid & Psyche 85" in 1985, which spawned hits like "Wood Beez (Pray Like Aretha Franklin)" and "Perfect Way." These tracks epitomized the group's intricate fusion of pop, funk, and electronic elements. Throughout its career, Scritti Politti has experienced numerous lineup changes, with Green Gartside remaining as the constant creative force. Known for Gartside’s distinct vocals and intellectual lyricism, the band has continued to influence and intrigue, maintaining a loyal following and a respected place in the landscape of British pop music.
