Athlete

Athlete is an English indie rock band that was formed in Deptford, London, in 2000. The original lineup consists of childhood friends Joel Pott (vocals and guitar), Carey Willetts (bass and backing vocals), Stephen Roberts (drums and backing vocals), and Tim Wanstall (keyboards and backing vocals). Known for their eclectic mix of reflective lyrics, electronic elements, and rock melodies, Athlete first gained attention with the release of their debut album, "Vehicles & Animals," in 2003, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize. Their breakthrough came in 2005 with their second album, "Tourist," which reached number one on the UK Albums Chart, driven by the success of the single "Wires." This song, inspired by Pott's daughter who was born prematurely, resonated deeply with audiences. Following this, Athlete released two more albums, "Beyond the Neighbourhood" (2007) and "Black Swan" (2009), further showcasing their evolution in sound. Despite a positive reception, their later works didn't replicate the earlier commercial success. The band has been on an indefinite hiatus since 2013, leaving a legacy of introspective and innovative music in the indie rock scene.
